Lindsay Duncan and Alex Jennings in ‘Hansard’: photos

Olivier Award winners Lindsay Duncan and Alex Jennings star in a witty new play by Simon Woods at the National Theatre in London.

A comic yet devastating portrait of the governing class, the two-hander is set on a summer’s morning in 1988 as Tory politician Rob Hesketh (Jennings) returns home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife of 30 years, Diana (Duncan) to find all is not as it appears. As the day draws on, what starts as gentle ribbing and the familiar rhythms of marital sparring quickly turns to blood-sport.

Directed by Simon Godwin, the show opened to rave reviews in September with Jennings and Duncan described as a ‘truly dynamic duo’ (Broadway World).

A double Olivier and Tony award winner, Duncan’s numerous stage credits include Hay FeverPrivate Lives (also on Broadway), Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Cryptogram, The Face. Her screen roles include Le WeekendAboutTimeUnder the Tuscan SunAfterlifeMansfield ParkThe Reflecting Skin and Prick UpYour Ears.

Alex Jennings was most recently seen on screen playing Edward VIII on  The Crown, his extensive theatre credits include My Fair Lady, Present Laughter, The Importance of Being Earnest and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Hansard runs until 29 November at the Lyttelton Theatre, National Theatre.
