The 73rd annual Tony Awards were announced last night in a spectacular event hosted by James Corden at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Hadestown was the big winner of the evening coming home with eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin, Best Original Score for Music & Lyrics for Anaïs Mitchell and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for André De Shields.
Jezz Butterworth’s The Ferryman won four Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play for Same Mendes with Rob Howell winning both Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Costume Design of a play.
There was disappointment for new musical Tootsie, nominated for 11 Tony’s including Best Musical it only won Best Book of a Musical and Best Performance in a leading role in a musical for Santino Fontana.
Bryan Cranston won Best Actor in a Play for Network with 87 year-old Elaine May winning best Actress in a Play for The Waverly Gallery.
