New casting and shows have been announced for Theatre Royal Bath’s 2019 summer season.
Katherine Parkinson, Janie Dee as well as Vanessa Redgrave, Stephen Mangan, Miles Jupp and David Edgar among the stars set to take to the stage in both treasured classics and acclaimed new works.
Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Humans, Home, I’m Darling) joins the cast of Anton Chekhov’s theatrical masterpiece Uncle Vanya. This new version by David Hare is directed by Rupert Everett who also stars in the title role.
Uncle Vanya also features Clémence Poésy (In Bruges, Harry Potter), Ann Mitchell (Widows, EastEnders), John Light (Mary Stuart), John Standing (The First Churchills) and Marty Cruickshank (Call the Midwife). The piece runs from 18 July to 3 August.
Janie Dee (Follies), Michelle Asante (Our Lady of Kibeho), Aysha Kala (Obsession) and Lewis Reeves (My Night with Reg) will star in the UK premiere of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Directed by Tony Award-winner Walter Bobbie, Christopher Durang’s comedy opens the season, running from 6 June to 6 July in the Ustinov Studio.
The production will be followed by Blithe Spirit, directed by Richard Eyre and starring Jennifer Saunders and Lisa Dillon as previously announced, with Emma Naomi (Pinter at the Pinter), Geoffrey Streatfeild (Spooks), Simon Coates (Richard III), Lucy Robinson (Cold Feet) and Rose Wardlaw (Outlying Islands) completing the cast.
A new stage adaptation of classic Ealing comedy The Man in the White Suit adapted and directed by Sean Foley will star Stephen Mangan (Episodes, Green Wing) and Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge). The piece will run from 5 September to 21 September followed by a West End transfer.
Vanessa Redgrave will star in Vienna 1934 – Munich 1938, A Family Album is a new piece devised, written and directed by the Olivier, Tony and Academy Award winning actress that explores the thoughts, fear and love affairs of her father and his European friends in the 1930’s. Running from 11 July to 3 August in the Ustinov Studio, the piece also features Robert Boulter and Paul Hilton.
Miles Jupp (Rev, The Thick of It, The News Quiz) will bring to life the remarkable story of David Tomlinson, the actor best remembered for his performance as Mr Banks in the classic Disney film Mary Poppins. The Life I Lead is a richly comic and moving tale of fathers and sons across different generations. (27-31 August)
Acclaimed dramatist David Edgar will mark his professional debut as a performer in Trying It On, a fascinating deliberation on how, why and whether our opinions change in the course of time.(3-7 September)
As previously announced, the summer programme will also include William Boyd’s The Argument (7-24 August) starring Felicity Kendal, with further casting to be announced in due course.
