Louise Jameson and Thomas Mahy star in Robert Chevara’s acclaimed production of Philip Ridley’s Vincent River.

Philip Ridley’s modern classic was a huge success when it premiered at Hampstead Theatre in 2001, and a West End smash at Trafalgar Studios in 2007. This year, it returns to Studio 2 as a new production direct from the Park Theatre.

Thrilling, heartbreaking and darkly humorous by turns, it is now seen as one of the most powerful explorations of hate crime – and society’s need to crush ‘difference’ – ever written.

Vincent River is booking from 16 May 2019 until 22 June 2019 at Trafalgar Studio Two, London.

Hate crime play ‘Vincent River’ gets West End transfer
Louise Jameson and Thomas Mahy are to reprise their roles in Robert Chevara's production of Vincent River, which transfers from the Park Theatre. The two-hander is Philip Ridley's exploration of hate crime, where a woman is coming to terms with the death of her son, who was killed in a homophobic attack. Thrilling, heartbreaking and darkly humorous by turns, it's now seen as one of the most powerful explorations of hate crime. Chevara said: "Vincent River is a modern classic and a dazzling, prescient piece of theatre. The play is even more prophetic now than when it was first produced. The murder of Jo Cox MP in 2016 shocked the nation and hate crimes have risen by 17 per cent this last year alone. But hate crimes against LGBT people in the UK have surged over 78 per cent in the last five years." Ridley's one-act play originally opened at Hampstead Theatre in 2001 and subsequently transferred to Trafalgar Studios in 2007. This production ran at the Park Theatre in 2018. Louise Jameson's forty-year career has seen her on stage at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, but she is best known for the iconic role of assistant Leela in Dr Who opposite Tom Baker in the Seventies.
