Covent Garden’s Iris Theatre will stage Hamlet and The Hunchback of Notre Dame for their 10th anniversary season of Summer promenade productions.
Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy has been relocated to our own divided little island and will be staged in a contemporary context to illuminate both the play and our own relationship with its timeless themes. Hamlet will run from 19 June until 27 July 2019.
A new family-friendly adaptation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale of injustice, survival and love will receive its world premiere in the grounds of St Paul’s Church. A spectacular adventure for all the family, Esmerelda, the hunchback mediaeval and the colourful world of mediaeval Paris is brought to life in Benjamin Polya’s adaptation. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will run from 1 August 2019 until 1 September 2019.
Casting for both productions is to be announced.
Iris Theatre launched its first summer season in 2009 with an acclaimed outdoor promenade production of Romeo & Juliet. In the decade since they have produced 16 more shows in the grounds of St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, ranging from Alice in Wonderland to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
