Where is Mary Poppins playing and when?

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh today announced Mary Poppins the musical will begin previews at the Prince Edward Theatre in London on 23 October 2019 with opening night on 13 November 2019.

The show will have an initial 5-month run, booking up to 29 March 2020.

Who has been cast in Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre

As previously announced, the cast will be led by Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins and Charlie Stemp as Bert.

Zizi Strallen recently played Fran in Strictly Ballroom – The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre, and returns to the role of Mary Poppins have played the role of Mary Poppins on tour in the UK, Ireland and in Dubai. Her other stage roles include Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man and Cinderella at Sadler’s Wells, Cats and Scrooge at the London Palladium and Rock of Ages at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Award-winning Charlie Stemp has recently been seen in Snow White at the London Palladium and later this month he opens in a UK tour of Rough Crossing.  His previous theatre credits include Barnaby Tucker opposite Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!,the title role in Dick Whittington (London Palladium) and his critically acclaimed break-through performance as Arthur Kipps in Half a Sixpence at the Nöel Coward Theatre.

Tickets for the West End revival of Mary Poppins will go on-sale at 10am GMT on 28 January 2019.

What’s Mary Poppins about?

At its heart, Mary Poppins is a magical story about the importance of family.

With a gust of wind, the worlds favourite nanny arrives on Cherry Tree Lane to bring order to dysfunctional Banks family. With her unique brand of lifestyle and help from Bert, the Chimney Sweep, Mary Poppins might just save the Banks family after all.

What’s the story behind Mary Poppins?

For those who have been living on another planet, Mary Poppins is a fictional nanny created by novelist Pamela Travers. Disney famously bought the rights from Travers and made one of the most successful musical films of all time which starred Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke. 

Cameron Mackintosh and Disney created a musical stage adaptation of the film featuring songs from the film, new material by George Stiles and Anthony Drew, and a book by Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes.

Disney recently released a new film, Mary Poppins Returns starring Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda which is set a few decades after the original film.
