Simon Callow will star in A Christmas Carol at the Arts Theatre for a strictly-limited 5-week season this Christmas.
Following previous runs in 2012, 2013 and 2016, Simon Callow will reprise his role in the much-lauded production which is based on an adaptation by Charles Dickens from his own public performances on the classic tale.
Callow has worked with director-designer Tom Cairns to produce a one-man production of the Christmas story.
Led by three ghostly Christmas spirits, Ebenezer Scrooge is taken on a journey through time. When faced directly with his past, present and future, Scrooge is taken on a last-chance path to redemption by dealing with his actions and consequences.
Callow is no stranger to Dickens. He has played the author in stage productions of The Mystery of Charles Dickens and Dr Marigold & Mr Chops at Riverside Studios, on television in the BBC’s An Audience with Charles Dickens as well as episodes of Doctor Who in 2005 and 2011. Callow has also written two books about the author: Dickens’ Christmas and Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World.
In a career that spans over four decades, recent non-Dickens credits include performing in the 2008 run of Equus at the Chichester Festival Theatre, where he played the psychiatrist. In 2009, he starred as Pozzo in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot alongside Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart. He also plays Henry Palmer in The Rebel, a British comedy series on Gold.
Callow has also starred in the one-man plays Being Shakespeare at the Trafalgar Studios in 2011, which transferred to New York City and Chicago and enjoyed a later revival at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2014.
Callow and Cairns have also recreated the production for the cinema, to be shown in cinemas nationwide on 11th December 2018.
A Christmas Carol with Simon Callow is booking from 8 December 2018 until 12 January 2019 a the Arts Theatre, London
