Kander and Ebb’s musical The Rink opened at Southwark Playhouse last night with guests including John Partridge (EastEnders), Maz Murray (Mamma Mia!) Bonnie Langford (Doctor Who, Dancing on Ice, EastEnders) and Britain’s Got Talent winner, George Sampson.
Broadway and West End star Caroline O’Conner plays an Italian housewife who runs a roller-skating rink on the Eastern seaboard, with Gemma Sutton playing her estranged daughter who returns home in the hope of saving the rink and convincing her mother not to sell to developers.
The production premiered on Broadway in 1984 starring Chita Rivera and Liza Minelli as mother and daughter with Rivera winning the Tony Award for her performance.
The new production is the first London revival of the musical in 20 years and is directed by Adam Lenson with choreography by Fabian Aloise.
The creative team also includes set design by Bec Chippendale, costume design by Libby Todd, lighting design by Matt Daw, sound design by Mike Thacker and casting by Jacob Sparrow.
The Rink is booking until 23 June 2018 at Southwark Playhouse, London.
