About Patti Lupone
Pattie Lupone will perform the role of ‘Joanne’ in Marianne Elliot’s visionary new staging of Company at the Gielgud Theatre in London.
A two-time Grammy, Tony and Olivier award winning singer and actress, Pattie Lupone is best known for her musical theatre roles on Broadway and London.
Considered an icon on Broadway her many career highlights include:
- Originating the role of Eva Perón in the Broadway production of Evita and playing Mama Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy, both of which earned her Tony Awards.
- She played Fantine in the original London cast of Les Misérables and Moll in The Cradle Will Rock, winning the 1985 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her work in both
- Olivier-nominated performance as Norma Desmond in original London production of Sunset Boulevard and her Tony-nominated role as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
- She also won two Grammy Awards for the recording of the 2007 Los Angeles Opera production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny in categories of Best Classical Album and Best Opera Recording.
Not without controversy Patti Lupone famously sued Andrew Lloyd Webber when he replaced her for Glenn Close in the Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard, winning $1million dollars and ensuing a two-decade feud which has only thawed at this years Grammy Awards.

A longtime collaborator with David Mamet, she has appeared in his plays The Woods, All Men are Whores, The Blue Hour, The Water Engine, Edmond and The Old Neighborhood.
Other theatre credits include Oliver!(West End), Anything Goes (Broadway), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Broadway), Master Class (Broadway/West End) and U.S productions of Noises Off, The Anarchist, Annie Get Your Gun, Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Can-Can, Candide, Passion and most recently War Paint on Broadway.

Patti Lupone plays the role of Bobbi’s older, acerbic and cynical friend Joanne. The role was originally performed by Elaine Stritch and includes the much loved songs “The Ladies Who Lunch” and “The Little Things You Do Together”.
What is Company about
Company is a musical comedy by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. The plot centres around Bobbi (a single woman unable to commit to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), five married couples who are her best friends, and her three boyfriends.
Set at Bobbi’s 35th birthday party all her friends are wondering why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man? Why doesn’t she settle down and have a family?
This production will be directed by Marianne Elliot and for the first time ever, the lead role of Bobbi will be played by a woman.
Company runs from 26 September 2018 until 22 December 2018 at the Gielgud Theatre.
