Patti LuPone: ‘Would I work with Andrew Lloyd Webber again? God, no!’

The Broadway star is bringing her one-night-only show, A Life in Notes, to the London Coliseum. She talks about the triumphs and failures of her career — and why she will always speak out

Patti LuPone has retired from musicals — kinda, sorta — but there’s nothing retiring about her attitude to her life or work. The Broadway star, 75, has just finished a New York run of a two-hander called The Roommate with her Connecticut neighbour Mia Farrow. This year she plans to do a show based on Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children in which she journeys through a post-apocalypse New York. “And I show up with a cart selling my Tony awards,” she says with a happy snort.

First, though, LuPone is bringing her cabaret show, A Life in Notes, to the 2,400-seat London Coliseum for a one-off performance this weekend. She would have done more, she says, friendly and garrulous, but they didn’t know she would sell out so fast. By the time she did, the Coliseum was fully booked….
