Downton Abbey & The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel actress Penelope Wilton returns to the stage in the world premiere of Fanny and Alexander.
The new play is a stage adaption of legendary filmaker Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Fanny and Alexander, and has been adapted by Stephen Webster.
Penelope Wilton’s extensive theatre credits include her Olivier Award winning performance in Taken At Midnight (Theatre Royal Haymarket), Delicate Balance, Heartbreak House, The Deep Blue Sea at the Almeida; and, The House of Bernarda Alba, Tess, Piano, The Secret Rapture, Major Barbara, Much Ado About Nothing, Man and Superman, Betrayal, The Philanderer, Sisterly Feelings, Landscape at the National Theatre.
Her television and film work includes Downton Abbey, South Riding, Half Broken Things, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films, The History Boys, Pride and Prejudice and Shaun of the Dead.
Set amongst the gilded romance of 1900s Sweden, the play centres on sibling Fanny and Alexander, and how their world is turned upside down when their widowed mother remarries the iron-willed local bishop.
As creative freedom and rigid orthodoxy clash, a war ensues between imagination and austerity in this magical study of childhood, family and love.
The cast also features Thomas Arnold, Lolita Chakrabarti, Kevin Doyle, Karina Fernandez, Annie Firbank, Matt Gavan, Tim Lewis, Gary MacKay, Gloria Obianyo, Vivian Oparah, Michael Pennington, Hannah James Scott, Jonathan Slinger, Catherine Walker and Sargon Yelda.
Directed by Max Webster, the creative team includes set design by Tom Pye, costume design by Laura Hopkins, lighting by Mark Henderson, sound by Tom Gibbons, movement direction by Toby Sedgwick and illusion by Ben Hart. It will be composed by Alex Baranowski.
Fanny and Alexander will run from 21 February 2018 until 14 April 2018 at the Old Vic Theatre.
