Australia: Jason Donovan to star in The Rocky Horror Show 50th anniversary production
Jason Donovan is set to return to Australia next year to star in a new production of The Rocky Horror Show. The production, which kicks off at the Theatre Royal Sydney in February 2023, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the cult show. Donovan will once again be donning the corset, fishnets and platform heels to play Frank N Furter, alongside Australian radio announcer and TV personality Myf Warhurst as The Narrator. Joining them will be Ellis Dolan as Eddie / Dr Scott, Darcey Eagle as Columbia, Ethan Jones as Brad, Deirdre Khoo as Janet, Loredo Malcolm as Rocky and Henry Rollo as Riff Raff. Further cast will be announced soon. Written and created by Richard O’Brien, the legendary Tim Curry originated the role of Frank N Furter - first at the Royal Court Upstairs in 1973 and then in the cult 1975 movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Jason originally played the role in the 25th anniversary production of the show, way back in 1998. He recently told Australian journalist Edwina Bartholomew that: “You’ve really got to come out of yourself, quite extroverted in a way, and there’s a bit of naughtiness and cheekiness in this character. But what really drives me to this role is the music and the fantasy of the story - it appeals to that cheeky side in all of us, and, as an actor, that’s an interesting place to start, with a great character and some great songs.” Jason in having a busy year. In June he performed at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert in London; and also returned to the set of Neighbours with Kylie Minogue for the Aussie soap's finale. He is currently starring on stage in Grease at the West End's Dominion Theatre; and also touring in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Olivia Newton John">
Grease star Olivia Newton John dies at 73
Australian actress and singer Dame Olivia Newton John, who starred in the movie version of Grease, has died. Dame Olivia Newton-John was best known for starring in the 1978 movie Grease alongside John Travolta. Her husband, John Easterling, said in a statement: "Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time. “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.” A cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Newton-John stated in 2017 that the breast cancer that first struck her in 1992 has come back and spread to her spine. She said that she had been diagnosed with a second form of cancer in 2013, but had kept it a secret. She urged her native Australia to adopt the rules of the US state where she was residing at the time, California, to permit the medicinal use of marijuana, saying she was confident she would "win over it." John Travolta, her co-star in Grease, posted an emotional social media message that said: “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!” She will be best remembered for her role in Grease, the joyous 1978 adaptation of the Broadway stage musical. After meeting the producer at a dinner party and being offered the starring role of Sandy, Newton-John, who was 29 at the time, needed some convincing to accept the job since she thought she was too old to play a high school senior. In order to accommodate her Australian accent, the character was also changed. Born in Cambridge, UK, in 1948, Olivia Newton John straddled the worlds of acting, pop music and activism. Her musical career culminated in her 1981 album Physical, with other hits including Xanadu from her 1980 film of the same name. Grease The Musical is currently playing in London's West End at the Dominion Theatre, starring Dan Partridge as Danny, Olivia Moore as Sandy, and Peter Andre at select performances as Vince Fontaine..

Considered one of the all-time favourite musicals, the 1978 film adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John is the fourth highest-grossing live action musical of all time. The musical features beloved songs, including Summer Nights, Greased Lightnin’, Hopelessly Devoted To You and You’re The One That I Want. This will be the first new staging of the much-loved musical since the 1993 London revival starring Neighbours' Craig McLachlan as Danny and EastEnders Shane Ritchie as Kenickie. That production also premiered at the Dominion Theatre before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in 1996 where it ran for a further three years. A revival of this production returned to the Piccadilly Theatre in London in 2007 running for four years. “This is the first new production of Grease in the West End for 29 years, so we are excited to be bringing this grittier version to the Dominion Theatre. All the familiar songs from the film are included, plus some of the songs and script from the very first production which will be new to audiences. Directed by the brilliant Nikolai Foster and choreographed by the legendary Arlene Phillips, they have done an incredible job of reimagining one of the most popular musicals of all time, to make it feel fresh, entertaining and celebratory – something we all need right now.” said lead producer Colin Ingram GREASE originally opened in Chicago in 1971, followed by a move to Broadway in 1972, where it received seven Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical. During the show's eight-year run at the time, little known actors including Peter Gallagher, Patrick Swayze and John Travolta all appeared in the production, with Richard Gere understudying many roles before going on to star as Danny Zuko in the 1973 London premiere. GREASE has designs by Colin Richmond, orchestrations and musical supervision by Sarah Travis, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Tom Marshall and Richard Brooker and casting by David Grindrod CDG. Grease is booking from 3 May 2022 until 29 October 2022 at the Dominion Theatre, London.
