Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical School of Rock is to receive its UK premiere at the the New London Theatre later this year.
The hit Broadway musical which continues to break box office records at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway will open in the West End on 14 November 2016 with previews from 24 October 2016 at the New London Theatre.
Based on the wildly successful 2003 musical comedy film School of Rock starring Jack Black, the show sees wannabee rock-star Dewey Finn take a teaching job in a prestigious school to make ends meet. Discovering the musical talents of his class he enlists them to form a rock group and conquer Battle of the Bands.
Only a few weeks ago Jack Black attended the Broadway production calling the show “a Broadway masterpiece.”
Lloyd Webber had previously stated the Broadway musical would open in 2017 at the London Palladium however with the sudden announcement that Show Boat would close 4 months early a theatre has obviously become available.
The nationwide search for young performers began in March with a call for open auditions for children who must be eight years old (nine when rehearsals begin), under 5ft tall, resident in the UK and play a musical instrument. The cast will be made up of three teams of thirteen young performers.
No information on casting has been announced. Tickets will go on sale 25 May 2016.
School of Rock – The Musical will run from 24 October 2016 at the New London Theatre.
