New production photos have been released of Jay Presson Allen’s Tru, which is playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory until 15 November, with a cast made up of Tony Award-winner Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Charlotte d’Amboise.
Tru is directed by award-winning Rob Ashford and is running in the West End until 14 November 2026 following its critically acclaimed New York run earlier this year.
The funny and heartbreaking play is drawn from Truman Capote’s own words, and set in December 1975. It begins with Capote (played by Ferguson) alone in his New York apartment, reeling from a crisis that has cost him the friendship of the elite social circle he adored. The play is also an unflinching portrait of an artist at his breaking point, confronting the consequences of his most scandalous work.

Once a one-man play
Tru was originally staged as a solo piece in 1989, and had an acclaimed run in New York earlier this year. This new production, developed by Ashford, Ferguson and d’Amboise, includes two characters: Capote (played by Ferguson) and an unscripted, silent onstage presence played by d’Amboise.
In terms of the cast for the London version, Ferguson won a Tony Award for Take Me Out in 2022, and played King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, as part of a rotating line-up of actors taking on the role from 20 June to 11 July 2026
D’Amboise, a two-time Tony nominee for A Chorus Line and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, played Roxie Hart in Chicago and appeared in the original Broadway casts of Cats, Company and Contact.
