Ahead of its opening at the Barbican this Thursday 30 July, the producers of Death Note: The Musical have released an exclusive first listen to three songs from the show — giving fans their first chance to hear the score by Emmy, Grammy and Tony-nominated composer Frank Wildhorn.
The tracks, Where Is The Justice, Hurricane and When Love Comes, are available now via DeathNoteTheMusical.com. Demand has been overwhelming, with early dates selling out before the production has even opened, putting it on course to become one of the Barbican’s fastest-selling musical engagements. In response, an extra matinee has been added on Tuesday 8 September, and a final release of production seats is now available. The show plays a strictly limited six-week season, running until 12 September 2026,.
The much-anticipated London production is a landmark Japanese-British collaboration, with original Japanese producer HoriPro working alongside Trafalgar Theatre Productions. Based on the globally bestselling manga by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, it arrives following ten years of sold-out productions across Asia and record-breaking concerts at the London Palladium in 2023, now featuring a revised script and newly written songs alongside Wildhorn’s acclaimed original score.
Death Note: The Musical tells the story of Light Yagami (Xander Pang), a gifted high-school student who discovers a mysterious notebook bearing one chilling rule: anyone whose name is written in it will die. Disillusioned by a justice system he believes fails to punish criminals, Light begins using its power to build his vision of a new world — and as the bodies mount and the public hails the unseen killer as “Kira”, the authorities enlist the enigmatic detective L (Colin Ryan), setting the stage for a gripping psychological battle between two brilliant minds. The cast also features Stephanie Zaharis as Misa Amane, Telly Leung as Ryuk and Grace Mouat as Rem.
Directed by Stephen Whitson (Hamilton UK, Moulin Rouge! UK), the production features a creative team behind some of the West End’s biggest hits, including designer Jon Bausor, choreographer Fabian Aloise and musical supervisor Jason Howland.
