Stephen Mangan joins Kristin Scott Thomas in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at the Harold Pinter Theatre this autumn, directed by Ian Rickson.

Stephen Mangan is to join the previously announced Kristin Scott Thomas in a major new West End production of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard this autumn. Mangan (The Split, Episodes) will play Lopakhin opposite Scott Thomas’s Lyubov Ranevskaya in Sonia Friedman Productions’ staging, which plays a strictly limited season at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 3 October 2026 to 9 January 2027.

Directed by Ian Rickson in a new adaptation by Conor McPherson, the production sees a wealth of talent reunite. Mangan returns to work with Rickson following Pinter’s The Birthday Party in 2018, while Rickson and Scott Thomas collaborate again after his acclaimed production of The Seagull, for which she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress. Rickson and McPherson also reunite, having previously worked together on The Weir and a 2020 Uncle Vanya.

The full company has also now been announced, with Mangan and Scott Thomas joined by Ruby Bentall as Sharlotta, Megan Cusack as Dunyasha, Karl Johnson as Firs, Noof Ousellam as Yasha, Nadia Parkes as Anya, Jack Riddiford as Trofimov, Vinette Robinson as Varya, Shubham Saraf as Yepikhodov and Peter Wight as Gaev, with complete casting to follow.

Chekhov’s final masterpiece, The Cherry Orchard follows Lyubov Ranevskaya as she returns to her childhood estate after years abroad to find her family home and its beloved cherry orchard under threat. As old loyalties falter and new ambitions rise, a world of privilege begins to crumble in a play that captures a society in delicate, inevitable transition — as timeless and resonant as ever.
