Tilda Swinton led Man to Man announces international dates for run

Man to Man returns to the Royal Court Theatre as part of its 70th Anniversary programming. Tilda Swinton returns to the role she originated in the acclaimed 1988 UK premiere.

The Royal Court Theatre in London has put together a slate of programming for its 70th anniversary season that honours the past, celebrates the present, and shapes the future of theatre. Chief among them is the return of Manfred Karge’s Man to Man starring Tilda Swinton as Ella/Max.

Originally produced in 1988 with Swinton as the lead, Man to Man will also reunite members of the original creative team, including director Stephen Unwin, designer Bunny Christie and lighting designer Ben Ormerod.

The play, translated from German by Anthony Vivis, follows a woman in 1930s Germany who one day puts on her dead husband’s trousers and never takes them off. As the world around her changes, she endures war and dictatorship, hunger and humiliation but never loses her fighting spirit to stay alive.

Man to Man international dates

It has been announced that following its run at the Royal Court in September and October, the production will embark on several international dates.

First, it will head up to Scotland, where it will play a limited run at the Traverse Theatre. The 1988 production of Man to Man was originally produced at the venue before transferring down to the Royal Court.

Following the run in Scotland, the production will transfer to the Berliner Ensemble in Germany and then cross the Atlantic for a run in New York.

Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton is set to remain with the run for all of the announced performances. Further dates and details will be released at a later date.
