It was announced today that Catherine Tate is stepping down from her role in Oh, Mary! due to personal reasons. Mason Alexander Park will return to the role for the remaining dates in Tate’s run.

The award-winning comedy Oh, Mary! has issued a casting update for the remainder of Catherine Tate’s run. Originally scheduled to perform as Mary Todd Lincoln until 18 July, Tate has had to step down from the production for personal reasons.

A statement posted on the production’s Instagram account reads:

Due to personal reasons, Catherine Tate will no longer perform in Oh, Mary! at the Trafalgar Theatre.

Mason Alexander Park will return to the role of Mary Todd Lincoln from now until 18 July. Cole Escola will take over from 20 July.

Mason Alexander Park originated the role in the West End and departed the production earlier this year. Park will join a cast that includes Scott Karim as Mary’s husband Abraham Lincoln, Kate O’Donnell plays Mary’s chaperone, Oliver Stockley as Abraham’s assistant and Dino Fetscher plays her teacher.

The many faces of Mary Lincoln Todd

Tate’s casting as Mary Todd Lincoln marked the beginning of a slate of star casting for the award-winning comedy. Much like the Broadway production, the West End will see stars step into the former first lady’s boots for a limited run.

Catherine Tate took over from original star Mason Alexander Park in April and planned to stay in the role until 18 July.

Creator Cole Escola (Difficult People, At Home with Amy Sedaris), who wrote and originated the role on Broadway will star as Mary for a strictly limited run, from 20 July until 15 August 2026.

Following Escola, drag superstar Jinkx Monsoon is set to star as Mary from 17 August to 26 September.

A critically acclaimed production

Since the show arrived on Broadway and in the West End, it’s enjoyed plenty of critical acclaim. Called ‘ridiculously funny’ and a ‘glitter bomb of outrageousness,’ Oh, Mary is showing no signs of slowing down

The Broadway production has received numerous awards, including a Drama League Award for Outstanding Play, Two Tony Awards (of five nominations), an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Playwriting for Cole Escola. The UK production, which arrived in the West End in December 2025, won a 2026 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play.
