Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: New Works in London
The New Works programme showcases Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at its most forward-looking: a company that has spent nearly seven decades defining modern dance now demonstrating exactly why it remains at the top of its game. Featuring three UK premieres alongside a celebrated duet and the incomparable Revelations, this is a programme that balances the thrill of the genuinely new with the emotional power of one of the greatest works in the history of dance.
Blink of an Eye by Medhi Walerski (UK Premiere)
In an intriguing work that probes the relationship between dance and music, Medhi Walerski lays bare the strength and vulnerability inherent in the creative process. The timeless beauty of J.S. Bach’s violin sonatas and partita anchors athletic movement that is both precise and expansive — a quietly mesmerising exploration of what it means to create.
A Case of You by Judith Jamison
A sensual duet, which is an excerpt from Judith Jamison’s 2005 Reminiscin’, this emotionally intense showstopper is danced to Diana Krall’s sultry rendition of the classic Joni Mitchell song. Jamison, one of the defining figures in the history of Ailey, brings her characteristic emotional intelligence and depth to choreography that lingers long after the curtain falls.
Many Angels by Lar Lubovitch (UK Premiere)
Against a heavenly backdrop, dancers float across the stage to Adagietto from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Equal parts monumental and dreamlike, Many Angels is a brilliant showcase of technical skill and stunning musicality and one of the most visually ravishing works in the programme.
Song of the Anchorite by Jamar Roberts (UK Premiere)
Renowned choreographer Jamar Roberts brings a fresh perspective to the 1961 solo Hermit Songs — Alvin Ailey’s original response to a set of medieval religious texts and the haunting Samuel Barber song cycle they inspired. Danced to jazz trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s interpretation of a Maurice Ravel composition, the result is a powerful meditation on passion and devotion, both earthly and spiritual.
Revelations by Alvin Ailey
Alvin Ailey’s iconic Revelations is the ultimate anthem to resilience and joy. Using African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, it fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. Since its premiere in 1960, Revelations has been performed continuously around the globe, making it the most widely seen modern dance work in the world. Seeing it for the first time (or the hundredth) is a transcendent experience, with audiences cheering, singing along and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive I Been ‘Buked to the triumphant finale, Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.
