The first production photos are out for An Ideal Husband at the Lyric Hammersmith, staged on the 100th anniversary of its last appearance at the Lyric in 1926.
Putting a contemporary twist on the classic comedy, which sees Oscar Wilde turn his laser-sharp satire to the world of politics and high society, An Ideal Husband is now playing at the Lyric Hammersmith until 6 June 2026.
Taking the Victorian tale of scandal and placing it firmly in modern-day London, director Nicolai La Barrie’s (The Amen Corner, Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York) take surfaces how we are still facing many of the same struggles and asking the same questions as we were when the play was first staged in 1895.
Starring Jamael Westman (Hamilton) as Lord Goring, Aurora Perrineau (KAOS) as Mrs Cheveley,Tamara Lawrance (Get Millie Back) as Lady Chiltern, Tiwa Lade (A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Headlong) as Mabel Chiltern, Jeff Alexander (Of Mice and Men) as the Earl Of Caversham, and Suzette Llewellyn (EastEnders) as Lady Markby, it’s a bold reimagining for modern times.

What to expect
Providing one of Wilde’s wittiest quotes: ‘I love London Society! It is entirely composed now of beautiful idiots and brilliant lunatics.’ An Ideal Husband is arguably the sharpest of the playwright’s plays, charting the tale of Sir Robert Chiltern, a politician who seemingly has it all… until the mischievous Mrs Cheveley comes on the scene, bringing with her the threat of disgrace and public embarrassment.
How far will Sir Robert take it to protect his reputation? What price is he willing to pay to avoid a downfall?
