The critically acclaimed reggae musical returns to its East London home this May with a powerhouse cast and a summer party atmosphere.
Stratford East has announced lead casting for the highly anticipated return of Suzan-Lori Parks’ hit musical adaptation of The Harder They Come. Following a sell-out run last year, the production is set to transform the theatre into a 1970s Jamaican soundscape from 16 May to 4 July 2026.
Reprising the iconic role of Ivan – the aspiring singer turned folk hero – is Natey Jones (Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical). He will be joined by Madeline Charlemagne (Hadestown), who returns as Elsa until 6 June. In an exciting double-casting, the role of Elsa will be taken over by Chanice Alexander-Burnett (Les Misérables) from 8 June for the remainder of the run.

Also returning to the cast are Danny Bailey, Ashh Blackwood, Craig Blake, Aisha Davis, Kage Douglas, Robert Grose, Jack Matthew, Simon-Anthony Rhoden and Thomas Vernal.
New company members include: Llewellyn Jamal , Rachel John, Grace Kanyamibwa, Sophia Mackay, Nathaniel Morrison and Ashley Samuels.
A Cultural Phenomenon Reimagined
Based on the seminal 1972 film produced and directed by Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come is credited with bringing reggae to a global audience. This stage version, penned by Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks, stays true to the gritty soul of the original story while adding a fresh theatrical pulse.
The musical follows Ivan, who arrives in Kingston with dreams of superstardom. After being exploited by a manipulative music mogul, Ivan rebels, eventually finding himself at the top of both the music charts and the most-wanted list.

Director Matthew Xia, fresh from his success with Tambo & Bones and the ongoing tour of Small Island, returns to helm the production.
“There’s something rare about bringing a show like this back to the building where it belongs,” Xia commented. “This is a piece that lives in the exchange between the stage and audience—a summer reggae party driven by Jimmy Cliff’s music and the energy of this fantastic company.”
The Sound of Jamaica
The production features a legendary soundtrack, including the late Jimmy Cliff’s anthems “Many Rivers to Cross” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” alongside tracks by Toots and the Maytals and Desmond Dekker.
The creative team behind the revival includes choreographer Shelley Maxwell, set designer Simon Kenny, and music supervisor Ashton Moore.
