A major new Alice in Wonderland musical is coming to screens – and maybe the stage – starring music superstar Sabrina Carpenter.
Based on Lewis Carroll’s much-loved Alice in Wonderland story, the untitled movie is for Universal Pictures.
Marc Platt, the stage and movie producer of Wicked in the West End, and the Wicked movie franchise including Wicked: For Good, is producing the new film.
The Alice in Wonderland film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers). It has not been announced what part Sabrina Carpenter would be playing.
Also producing are Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars).
Alice in Wonderland, about a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantastical world, has enjoyed countless stage, TV and film adaptations, including a 2010 live-action movie directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.
Sabrina Carpenter recently scored six Grammy nominations including album of the year and best pop vocal album for “Man’s Best Friend”. Her previous acting roles have included The Hate U Give, Emergency, and Girl Meets World.
There’s no specific news on whether a stage musical adaptation might follow the movie, although Broadway and West End impresario Marc Platt’s involvement suggests it is a possibility.
Earlier this week, Marc Platt attended the London premiere for his new movie Wicked: For Good, which opens in cinemas on 21 November 2025.
