The Karate Kid has taken its first steps to the Broadway stage, with The Karate Kid – The Musical getting a development reading in New York.
The musical has plans to go to Broadway, and beyond!
The reading featured a number of Broadway stars, and in attendance was Ralph Macchio, who played Daniel LaRusso in four Karate Kid films, and producer and creator of the Cobra Kai series on Netflix, Josh Heald.
The cast for the Karate Kid reading included Kate Baldwin, Alan H. Green, Jake Bentley Young, Jetta Juriansz, Abby Matsusaka and Sydney Jones – all of whom starred in the STAGES St Louis tryout production of the show.
They were joined by Jon Jon Briones as Mr. Miyagi, Daniel Marconi as Daniel and Mateus Leite Cardoso as Freddie.
The show is being produced by Kumiko Yoshii, and directed by Amon Miyamoto, with designs by Derek McLane.
The Karate Kid The Musical has music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini (We Aren’t Kids Anymore), and a book by Robert Mark Kamen, who created and wrote The Karate Kid movies.
The hugely successful The Karate Kid franchise includes five movies, and the current hit Netflix series Cobra Kai.
2024 is the 40th anniversary of The Karate Kid.
