Hit Netflix series Heartstopper is finishing.
Since the debut of Heartstopper’s third season in October 2024, speculation has been rife over whether Netflix would greenlight a fourth and final season.
However, it seems that a compromise has been struck, and the show will come to an end with a feature film.
Netflix posted this morning, Tuesday 22 April 2025, that, “Heartstopper will return, bigger than ever. A Heartstopper movie, our final chapter based on Alice Oseman’s upcoming volume six, is coming!!!”
The movie will see Kit Connor as Nick and Joe Locke as Charlie return to the show, in addition to serving as executive producers.
The script of the movie is written by Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman, with Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) directing.
Filming is expected to start this summer. There’s no current news about the release date.
The movie will pick up where season three left off, with Nick and Charlie completely in love, but Nick about to go to university, and Charlie finding new independence at school.
Further casting hasn’t been confirmed, although series regulars such as William Gao as Tao, Yasmin Finney as Elle, Tobie Donovan as Isaac, Corinna Brown as Tara, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy, Rhea Norwood as Imogen, and Jenny Walser as Tori are expected to return for the movie.
Heartstopper has enjoyed huge critical and audience acclaim since it launched on Netflix in April 2022, particularly for its depiction of LGBTQ+ characters and themes.
Between Heartstopper seasons, and during the current hiatus, the stars of Heartstopper have been busy on numerous projects, including stage work.
Kit Connor recently starred in Romeo + Juliet on Broadway, alongside Rachel Zegler (Evita).
Joe Locke’s stage credits include starring in Sweeney Todd on Broadway, and in The Trials at the Donmar Warehouse in London.
Corinna Brown, who plays Tara in Heartstopper, is about to star in a new stage adaptation of Noughts & Crosses at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London (from 28 June).
Rhea Norwood, who plays Imogen, was one of the first actors to play Sally Bowles in the hit West End production of Cabaret.
