Broadway News: Tony Awards this weekend; Jennifer Hudson to sing Gary Barlow song from Finding Neverland; Alan Cumming, Neil Patrick Harris, Idina Menzel to perform.
Broadway is gearing up for the 68th annual Tony Awards this weekend (8 June 2014) at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
A highlight of this year’s awards is news just in that the musical Finding Neverland, based on the hit Miramax movie, will be showcased at the Awards, with a song from the show performed by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.
Playing this July at the American Repertory Theater directed by Diane Paulus, Finding Neverland will star Jeremy Jordan and Laura Michelle Kelly. The show has been an obsession for movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who produced the musical at the Leicester Curve in 2012 but the show failed to have traction for a West End run.
Now with a new director on board, and a new score by our very own Gary Barlow from Take That and a book by British playwright of the moment James Graham (Privacy, This House), all eyes will be on whether this has the makings of a Broadway show.
Tony Awards – Hugh Jackman
This year’s Tony Awards will be hosted again by Hugh Jackman, and are shaping up to be a best-ever, with performances from 2014 nominees Neil Patrick Harris and the cast of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Sutton Foster with the cast of Violet, Alan Cumming and the cast of Cabaret and Idina Menzel from new musical If/Then.
Celebrating its 10th birthday, Wicked will also perform during the show, alongside Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and Fantasia joining the cast of After Midnight, and Sting singing a song from his upcoming musical The Last Ship.
Plus numbers are expected from the Best Musical and Best Musical Revival nominees including Aladdin, Les Misérables, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Bullets Over Broadway and Rocky.
