Disney’s The Lion King has reached another significant milestone in its record-breaking West End run, celebrating its 10,000th performance at the Lyceum Theatre on 25 February 2025.
The acclaimed musical, which has been a staple of London’s theatre scene since opening in 1999, continues to draw audiences with its breathtaking staging, unforgettable music, and innovative puppetry. The achievement comes just months after the production celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2024 and also welcomed its 20 millionth guest this month.
The Lion King is set to break yet another record in March. On 8 March 2025, following the evening performance, the show will overtake Blood Brothers’ 10,013 performances to become the sixth longest-running show in West End history, with 10,014 performances and counting.
The musical’s success places it among an elite group of long-running West End productions. The current longest-running shows in London, in order, are The Mousetrap at St. Martin’s Theatre, Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre, The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre, followed by The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre.
West End theatre has a landmark year ahead. The Mousetrap, the world’s longest-running play, will mark its 30,000th performance on 19 March 2025, while Les Misérables will celebrate its 40th anniversary on 8 October 2025.
Adapted for the stage by Julie Taymor, The Lion King continues to captivate audiences worldwide, boasting 25 productions in nine languages. The show features music by Elton John and Tim Rice, additional material by Lebo M, Julie Taymor, and Mark Mancina, and a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. Its design team includes Richard Hudson (scenic design), Donald Holder (lighting), and Garth Fagan (choreography).
