Ayub Khan Din wrote East is East in 1997 as his first play, following an initial career as an actor.

East is East was staged at the Royal Court and Ayub then adapted the play into a successful British film starring Om Puri and Linda Bassett, for which he won a British Independent Film Award and a London Critics’ Circle Film Award, and was nominated for two BAFTAs for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Carl Foreman Award for Most Promising Newcomer, and a European Film Award for Best Screenwriter.

Ayub’s stage credits include Bunty Berman Presents off Broadway, for which he starred and co-authored.

Film credits include My Beautiful Laundrette, and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.

TV work includes Coronation Street, London Bridge, The Chief, Dangerfield, Boon, The Bill and Poirot.

Other writing work includes Last Dance at Dum Dum, Notes on Falling Leaves, All the Way Home, Rafta Rafta (Olivier Award winner for Best New Comedy) at the National Theatre, West is West, All in Good Time, and an adaptation of To Sir With Love.
