Full casting has been announced for Firebird at the King’s Head Theatre in London.
Based on a true story that took place during the Cold War, Firebird follows a handsome, soulful young soldier who embarks on a clandestine affair with a charismatic fighter pilot on an Air Force Base in Soviet-occupied Estonia, at the height of 1970s Communist rule.
The cast of Firebird will feature actor and fitness star Robert Eades (Young Woman & the Sea, Bad Education), TikTok star Theo Walker (Coming Clean), Nigel Hastings (The Forsyte Saga Parts 1 & 2, And Then Come the Night Jars) and Sorcha Kennedy (Rainer, Scarlet Sunday).
The story was turned into a successful 2021 movie which premiered at London’s LGBTQ+ film festival BFI Flare.

Written by Richard Hough, based on the memoir by Sergey Fetisov and the screenplay by Peeter Rebane and Tom Prior, Firebird is directed by Owen Lewis.
The wider creative team includes design by Gregor Donnelly, lighting design by Clancy Flynn, and sound design by Jac Cooper. The intimacy coordinator is Jess Tucker Boyd, and casting is by Marc Frankum CDG.
Producer James Seabright said in a statement: “I’m excited to be marking the first birthday of the new King’s Head Theatre with the world premiere stage version of Firebird, which won such widespread acclaim as a film by Peeter Rebane and Tom Prior that I felt compelled to contact them and was delighted to secure the stage rights, allowing me to commission this adaptation by Richard Hough. His play chillingly evokes the Soviet Union in the Cold War, in a powerful and moving true story of forbidden gay love brought to life by a cast of four in Owen Lewis’ production.”
Firebird is playing at the King’s Head Theatre London from 9 January to 9 February 2025.
