Jack Lowden has won the 2013 Ian Charleson Award.
Scottish actor Jack Lowden has been named the winner of the 2013 Ian Charleson Awards.
He won for his acclaimed performance as Oswald in Richard Eyre’s 2013 adaptation of Ibsen’s Ghosts at the Almeida Theatre and Trafalgar Studios, in a cast that also included Lesley Manville as Helene.
This year’s awards were announced at a dinner on 25 April 2014, with guest of honour actress Janet Suzman. Further runners-up will be published in the Sunday Times this Sunday, 4 May 2014.
The judges of the awards were Michael Grandage, Francesca Annis, Wendy Spon and John Peter.
It is proving to be a big month for Jack, as earlier in April he was awarded an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Ghosts.
Jack’s other stage credits include Chariots of Fire (Hampstead Theatre and West End), Black Watch (National Theatre of Scotland, Barbican Theatre and US Tour), Sweet Sorrow, Crime & Punishment, Uncle Vanya, A View From the Bridge and Peter Pan (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). On screen he has appeared in TV productions The Tunnel, Mrs. Biggs, Blue Haven and Being Victor, and movies uwantme2killhim and 71.
Established in 1991 in the year following the death of celebrated British actor Ian Charleson, the awards celebrate and reward the best young classical stage actors in Britain under 30 years old. The actors are nominated and awarded by a panel of judges made up of theatre professionals, and supported by the National Theatre and the Sunday Times.
Other nominees of this year’s Ian Charleson Awards include Jessie Buckley for her role as Miranda in The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe and as Princess Katharine in Henry V at the Noël Coward Theatre, Olivia Vinall for her Desdemona in Othello at the National Theatre, Brian Markey for Hugh in Mixed Marriage at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast and Rose Reynolds for Lavinia in Titus Andronicus at the RSC. Richard Eyre’s critically acclaimed production of Ghosts will be broadcast in cinemas in the UK and around the world on 26 June 2014.
UPDATED 5 MAY 2014: Further winners of the Ian Charleson Awards have now been announced. Alongside Jack Lowden as First Prize winner, Jessie Buckley has won the Second Prize for her performance as Miranda in The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe and as Princess Katharine in Henry V at the Noël Coward Theatre; and Graham Butler has won Third Prize for Henry VI in Henry VI, Parts I, II & III at Shakespeare’s Globe.
