Hit musical Sing Street from the creators of award-winning show Once, is coming to London in 2025.
Based on John Carney’s acclaimed movie Sing Street, the show is a coming-of-age musical about a group of kids in 1980s Dublin who form a rock band.
Sing Street will play the Lyric Hammersmith in London from 8 July to 23 August 2025, as part of their 2025 season.
John Carney also wrote Once, the Oscar-winning movie and award-winning stage show, which scored eight wins at the Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and enjoyed a successful run in the West End including winning an Olivier Award.
His collaborator on Once, Enda Walsh, also joined him as writer on Sing Street.
The show’s score boasts new wave sounds of the 80s, and has music and lyrics by John Carney and Gary Clark.
James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) is producing the show with the Lyric Hammersmith.
Sing Street premiered Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2019, but its Broadway plans were postponed due to Covid.
A successful production at Boston’s The Huntington theatre in 2022 was directed by Rebecca Taichman, with choreography by Sonya Tayeh, set designs by Bob Crowley, and video designs by Luke Hall, and this same creative team will reunite in London for the UK premiere of the show.
Sing Street is set in Dublin in1982, and sixteen year old Conor can’t catch a break. His parents are fighting, his brother won’t leave the house and he’s not fitting in at his new Catholic school. Enter Raphina, a mysterious girl who’s too cool for school and on the lookout for a modelling job. In an effort to impress, Conor hires her to star in a music video for his band. Only problem is he doesn’t have a band. Yet.
Sing Street composer and lyricist Gary Clark said: “We had so much fun creating the original songs for the movie and rekindled that spirit for the additions that we’ve written especially for this production, and I am absolutely thrilled to see Sing Street the musical hit the stage of The Lyric Hammersmith and to be working with such a brilliant and talented team.”
Sing Street is playing the Lyric Hammersmith from 8 July to 23 August 2025.
Also in the Lyric’s 2025 season is a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts by Gary Owen, directed by Rachel O’Riordan; a stage adaptation of Sathnam Sanghera’s novel Marriage Material, adapted by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, and directed by Iqbal Khan; and a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, directed by Emma Baggott. Currently playing at the Lyric Hammersmith is A Raisin in the Sun until 2 November 2024; followed by Aladdin from 16 November 2024 to 16 January 2025; musical Play On! from 28 January to 22 February 2024; and Macbeth from 28 February to 29 March 2025.
