She’s having a HUGE hit in New York at the moment – and we Brits might get to see it too! Emma Thompson is currently the toast of Broadway in the New York Philharmonic’s production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – playing for only five shows at Avery Fisher Hall (until 8 March 2014).

And the gossip is that the show will be filmed for a Live From Lincoln Center PBS special, to be broadcast around the US soon – and released on DVD! Playing Mrs Lovett in the musical alongside Welsh opera singer Bryn Terfel as Sweeney and Christian Borle as Pirelli, the show – and Thompson especially – have garnered some great buzz. It’s the first stage outing for Ms Thompson since her 1990 tour of King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – and here’s hoping it is the start of new theatre work for the London-based star. The Live From Lincoln Center special will be hosted by five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald and be televised on PBS stations in the US. More details on air dates and the DVD release to follow.
