The world premiere of new play The Gates of Kyiv is coming to Theatre Royal Windsor next month, starring Stockard Channing and Michael Praed.

Produced by West End and touring producers Bill Kenwright Ltd (Heathers, Blood Brothers, Death of England, Boys From the Blackstuff), The Gates of Kyiv will play the Theatre Royal Windsor from 4 to 14 September 2024, prior to a West End run.

Hollywood and Broadway actor Stockard Channing (Grease, Six Degrees of Separation), will take the role of Maria Yudina, and renowned British stage and TV actor Michael Praed (Robin of Sherwood, The Sound of Music) will play Shostakovich.

A play for two actors, a pianist, and a dancer, The Gates of Kyiv promises to be a unique combination of storytelling, music, and dance, and also features celebrated Italian-based Russian pianist Gala Chistiakova, and international ballet star Xander Parish OBE.

The Gates of Kyiv tells the story of the extraordinary life of the Soviet piano virtuoso Maria Yudina – fearless protestor, disruptor, and ‘dissident.’ Fiercely defiant of the repressive regime of Joseph Stalin, she publicly denounced him and his regime, yet somehow, she lived.

The Gates of Kyiv is written by playwright, actor and historical biographer Ian Kelly, and will be directed by former Hampstead Theatre and Birmingham Rep artistic director Roxana Silbert.

The creative team also includes choreography by Kenneth Tindall, design by Ti Green, lighting design by Rick Fisher, sound design by Fred De Faye, and video design by Louis Price.

The Gates of Kyiv will play the Theatre Royal Windsor from 4 to 14 September 2024.

The Gates of Kyiv is playing the Theatre Royal Windsor prior to a West End run, although no further details have been announced.
