US filmmaker Akiva Goldsman (The Client, Batman Forever, I Robot) has revealed that a Star Trek stage musical may be in the works.

Speaking this weekend on the Paramount+ panel at Comic-Con in the US, Goldsman said that “we’re in the very early stages of figuring out whether we can bring a version of that to the stage.”

The “that” in question is new Paramount+ streaming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has featured musical numbers in the show, namely episode 9 in the second series, “Substance Rhapsody”.

Goldsman is showrunner on Strange New Worlds alongside Henry Alonso Myers. The pair commissioned Letters to Cleo bandmates turned TV composers Kay Hanley and Tom Polce to write the songs for the episode. It’s not currently clear if they will also be writing music for the stage musical.

Celia Rose Gooding, Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong in the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are all seasoned singers, but much of the rest of the principle cast also performed in the episode.

This news was first reported by Deadline.

The idea of a musical episode has been bubbling within the Star Trek universe for a long time. Goldsman told Variety that even way back on season 1 of Star Trek: Picard, they had the idea of a musical episode. But sadly a call put in to Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) by showrunner Michael Chabon failed to get a call back, and there the musical idea died.

Let’s hope that with this first Star Trek musical episode, more are to follow, and a musical makes it to the West End!
