The doors have opened at London’s newest theatre – the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, part of Shakespeare’s Globe on the Southbank.

This unique new indoor space allows the Globe to be an all-year venue and to investigate staging Jacobean plays in their intended atmosphere.

The theatre holds up to 340 people, with two tiers of galleries and a pit seating area, and is predominantly lit by candles.

The first production in the new theatre is  The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster, directed by Dominic Dromgoole and starring Gemma Arterton (until 16 February 2014).

In the play, the widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio. But her rancorous brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are implacably opposed to the match. When their spy, Bosola, discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio’s child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The cast includes Gemma Arterton as the Duchess, Sean Gilder as Bosola, David Dawson as Ferdinand, James Garnon as the Cardinal, Denise Gough as Julia and Alex Waldmann as Antonio.
