Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream not returning to ITV for Season Two

ITV has confirmed that their TV talent show Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream has been cancelled after one season.

An ITV spokesman said: “Mamma Mia I Have A Dream was commissioned to celebrate 25 years of the musical, so was only ever intended to be a one off series. The show sought to find a new Sophie and Sky, who are now starring in the West End musical.”

The show performed well in the ratings for ITV, especially the live final episode which peaked at 1.9 million viewers. But the series struggled to score large audiences across its run, especially when competing against Strictly Come Dancing.

The TV talent contest, which ran last autumn on ITV, set out to cast Sophie and Sky in long-running West End musical mega-hit Mamma Mia!.

The winners were announced in December at a grand final at the West End home of Mamma Mia! – the Novello Theatre in London, with Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley winning the public vote, and the roles of a lifetime in the hit musical.

The pair are both now playing Sophie and Sky in the West End production of Mamma Mia! until 5 October 2024.

Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream was broadcast over 8 weeks, and saw 14 young contestants singing, dancing, and acting against each other, all filmed on an island in Greece where the Mamma Mia! story is set.

Each week the theatre hopefuls were put through their paces with a series of workshops, where they were mentored by Mamma Mia!’s choreographer Anthony Van Laast and musical director Martin Lowe, under the watchful eye of the creator and global producer of Mamma Mia! Judy Craymer.on the Greek island Corfu.

The show was hosted by Zoe Ball, and judging the contestants during the series were West End star of Frozen The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Samantha Barks; Olivier Award-winning TV and stage star Amber Riley (Glee, The Wiz, Dreamgirls); comedian Alan Carr; and singer songwriter Jessie Ware.

A few weeks ago on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 show she confirmed the news alongside Alan Carr, saying, “We’re not going back to Corfu. This time last year we were packing our bags to go there but – and it’s a shame.”

Carr said: “I loved doing that show.”

The TV show started with 14 Sophie and Sky hopefuls: Desmonda, Esme, Leah, Maddy, Maisie, Stephanie & Stevie; and Callum, Craig, Darcy, Marcellus, Owen, Tobias & Zachkiel. Watch clips from episode 1, episode 2, episode 3, episode 4, episode 5, episode 6, and episode 7, and episode 8.

And the final was a battle between the last 4 finalists – Stevie Doc, 22, a musical theatre teacher from Glasgow, Esme Bowdler, 23, a barista from Chester, Owen Johnston, 25, a theatre usher from Belfast and Tobias Turley, 23, a singing waiter from Somerset.

A number of other Mamma Mia! I Had a Dream contestants have gone on to perform in the West End and on tour including Desmonda Cathabel in Disney’s Aladdin UK Tour, Zachkiel Smith in Back to the Future, Craig Watson in Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical, and  Esme Bowdler, who is currently starring in Heathers The Musical at @sohoplace in London.
