Acclaimed Australian circus troupe Circa are heading back to London’s Southbank Centre this Christmas, with a circus spin on Swan Lake called Duck Pond.
Duck Pond radically reimagines classic ballet Swan Lake as a circus spectacular, full of Circa’s signature physicality and shot through with cheeky humour and a thoroughly contemporary energy.
The show promises to sweep audiences away with a tale of swans and hapless princes in a touching, funny and entertaining tale of identity and finding your true self.
Created by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa Ensemble, Duck Pond had its world premiere at Circa’s Brisbane base in Australia in 2023.
Duck Pond is directed by Yaron Lifschitz, with Composer and Sound Designer Jethro Woodward, Costume Designer Libby McDonnell, Lighting Designer Alexander Berlage, Associate Director Marty Evans, Dramaturg and Associate Choreographer Rani Luther, and Voice Over Artist Elise Greig.
The show has already toured to China, the US, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
Circa Director Yaron Lifschitz said: “I can’t wait to bring Duck Pond to London. There is truly something for everyone in this show. I wanted to make something beautiful, funny, sophisticated and accessible to reach across all ages and artistic preferences. We hope fairy tale and circus lovers alike will be transfixed as Duck Pond draws upon the worlds of Swan Lake and The Ugly Duckling, as well as a variety of different acrobatic languages-from the seductive burlesque Black Swan to the clowning of the sequin flippered Duck Army.
Last Spring 2023 Circa brought their show Humans 2.0 to the Southbank Centre for a limited run.
Last Christmas at the Southbank Centre saw Drew McOnie bring a jazz inspired take on classic ballet The Nutcracker to a specially built jazz club within the Royal Festival Hall.
Duck Pond will run at the Southbank Centre’s Royal festival Hall from 19 to 30 December 2024.
