First-look production photos are in of Birmingham Rep’s stage adaptation of Withnail and I – now playing until 25 May.

BAFTA and IFTA nominated Irish actor Robert Sheehan stars as Withnail and Adonis Siddique as Marwood.

Birmingham Rep’s brand new adaptation of Bruce Robinson’s 1987 British tragi-comedy film, Withnail and I is directed by the double Olivier Award-winning Artistic Director of Birmingham Rep, Sean Foley (Dr. Strangelove) and designed by Alice Power. The hugely anticipated show began performances in Birmingham on the 3 May.

The Withnail & I cast is completed by Malcolm Sinclair (Uncle Monty), Adam Young (Danny), Israel J Fredericks (Presuming Ed), Morgan Philpott (Wanker/Jake the Poacher), Matt Devitt (Farmer/Colonel & Band), Adam Sopp (Geezer/Policeman, Band & Musical Director) and Sooz Kempner (Miss Blenehassitt/Policewoman & Band).

Set in London in the swinging sixties, the story centres on two unemployed actors who live in a squalid flat in Camden Town, and who go on holiday together to the Lake District. The movie starred Richard E Grant as the alcoholic Withnail and Paul McGann as the narrator, “I”, and has spawned a million comedy quotes since it premiered in 1987.

Withnail and I is playing at the Birmingham Rep theatre from 3 to 25 May 2024.
