A brand new production of Disney’s Hercules is gearing up for its premiere next month in Hamburg, Germany. To celebrate, Disney and its producing partner, Stage Entertainment, have dropped a number behind-the-scenes videos from the making of this big new show.
This completely new production is based on Disney’s classic 1997 animated movie, and is the story of a demigod who embarks on a quest for his place in the world.
There are plenty of epic stage sets and spectacular costumes in the show, and the videos feature interviews with some of the production’s creatives including director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (Disney’s Aladdin), costume designers Gregg Barnes and Sky Switser, and set designer Dane Laffrey.
Disney’s Hercules has songs by Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winners Alan Menken (music) and David Zippel (lyrics), including new songs written specially for the show, plus music from the movie including “Go the Distance”. The book is by Tony Award winners Robert Horn (Tootsie) and our very own Kwame Kwei-Armah, outgoing Young Vic Artistic Director.
Other creatives attached to the production include video designer George Reeve, with additional video design by Dane Laffrey, co-choreographer Tanisha Scott, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, sound designer Kai Harada, puppet designer James Oritz, hairstyles and wigs by Mia M. Neal, makeup by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche, special effects by Jeremy Chernick, music supervisor and arranger Michael Kosarin, orchestrations by Danny Troob and Joseph Joubert, and dance arrangements by David Chase.
The principle cast includes Benét Monteiro as Hercules, Hope Maine as Hercules Alternating, Mae Ann Jorolan as Meg, Leslie Beehann as Calliope, Chasity Crisp as Thalia, Venolia as Terpsichore, UZOH as Clio, Shekinah Mcfarlane as Melpomene, Kristofer Weinstein Storey as Phil, Detlef Leistenschneider as Hades, Mario Saccoccio as Charles, and Andre Haedicke as Heinz.
In November last year at the Royal Variety Performance, during a special 100th anniversary celebration of Disney, the Five Muses from Hercules performed “Zero to Hero” from the show.
Disney’s Hercules opens at the Neue Flora Theater in Hamburg Germany from 10 March, booking to 22 December 2024.
