Director Jeremy Herrin returns to Chichester to stage Julian Mitchell’s award-winning drama Another Country, a fictionalised account of the youth of such people as the spy Guy Burgess and the Communist John Cornford, who died in the Spanish Civil War.
Another Country is co-produced with Theatre Royal Bath Productions in association with Fiery Angel.
It’s the 1930s: an English Public School.
Bennett and Judd are both outsiders, one coming to terms with his homosexuality, the other already a committed Marxist. But the Establishment has traditional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rooks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives.
Julian Mitchell is an English playwright, screenwriter and novelist whose theatre credits include After Aida. His screenplays include Arabesque, Wilde and Vincent and Theo. Television credits include Consenting Adults and episodes of Inspector Morse.
Jeremy Herrin directed Uncle Vanya for Chichester during Festival 2012. He also directed South Downs for Chichester’s Festival 2011, which transferred to the West End in 2012. Earlier this year he was announced as the new Artistic Director of Headlong Theatre. He is Associate Director of the Royal Court Theatre where his credits include The Heretic and That Face. Other credits include the critically acclaimed production of This House for the National Theatre, Children’s Children, Haunted Child, Absent Friends, Death and the Maiden and Much Ado About Nothing, and the forthcoming Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for the RSC.
Will Attenborough plays Judd. His theatre credits include Festen, All My Sons, Noises Off and Journey’s End (ADC Theatre), the title role in Hamlet (SPS Theatre) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Cambridge Arts Theatre).
Cal Brigden plans Delahay. His theatre credits include the West End production of Butley, and screen credits include Casualty and The Telemachy.
Rob Callender plays Bennett. He graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2013.
Dario Coates plays Sanderson. His theatre credits include Trailing Dirt for which he received the Best Actor Award at the San Francisco Festival. Screen credits include Drifters and Coronation Street.
Mark Donald plays Devenish. His theatre credits include Widowers’ Houses and A Christmas Carol. Television credits include The Café and Best of Men.
Orlando James plays Barclay. His theatre credits include ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore, The Duchess of Malfi, The Madness of George III (Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, West End and Theatre Royal Bath), Judith and Macbeth (Cheek by Jowl, New York, Barbican and European tour).
Oliver Johnstone plays Fowler. His theatre credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre). Screen credits include Inspector George Gently, The Syndicate, Little Crackers, Lewis, Whitechapel 3 and Skyfall.
Bill Milner plays Wharton. His screen credits include The Secret of Crickley Hall, My Boy Jack, X Men – First Class, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Son of Rambow.
James Parris plays Menzies. His theatre credits include Richard III and King John (both for the RSC).
Julian Wadham plays Vaughan Cunningham. His previous Chichester credits include The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Philanthropist and Cavalcade. Other theatre credits include This House (National Theatre), West End productions of The Tempest and When We Are Married, That Face, The Recruiting Officer, Our Country’s Good and Serious Money (all for the Royal Court Theatre). Screen credits include The English Patient and The Madness of King George.
Design is by Peter McKintosh whose Chichester credits include Festival 2012’s Uncle Vanya, Love Story (which later transferred to the West End), The Scarlet Letter, Just So and Pal Joey. Other credits include The 39 Steps (West End and Broadway), which received Tony nominations for Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design, Crazy For You (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and West End), the West End production of Butley and Hello, Dolly! (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
Lighting Design is by Paul Pyant, whose Chichester credits include Separate Tables, Aristo, I am Shakespeare, The Scarlet Letter, Six Pictures of Lee Miller, King Lear, Electra and Talking Heads. Other theatre credits include The Heretic (Royal Court Theatre), West End productions of Flare Path and The Tempest, Richard III (Bridge Project London and New York), Grief (the National Theatre) and Noises Off (The Old Vic and West End).
Sound Design is by Fergus O’Hare whose credits include Festival 2011’s The Syndicate, Tiger Country (Hampstead Theatre), The Entertainer, Inherit the Wind, Richard II, The Philadelphia Story, Aladdin, Cloaca, Hamlet and The Tempest (all for The Old Vic), Julius Caesar, King Lear, Volpone and The Seagull (all for the RSC), The Merchant of Venice, The Black Album, Translations, Money and An Enemy of the People (all for the National Theatre).
