James Graham’s adaptation of Boys From The Blackstuff will transfer to the National Theatre in London this May.
Running on the Olivier stage for two-weeks only this Summer, the show begins performances on 22 May with a final performance on 8 June 2024. Prior to its London transfer the show will return to the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool for three-weeks where it premiered to critical acclaim last year. On the show’s return to Liverpool, Kevin Fearon Executive Producer at Liverpool’s Royal Court said “In 18 years of producing theatre by and for Liverpool, shows haven’t come any bigger than Boys From The Blackstuff. To be able to bring this fantastic piece of work back to the Court before it transfers to the National is as exciting as much as it is a real honour.”
Based on Alan Bleasdale’s ground-breaking TV series, the show has been adapted for the stage by leading playwright James Graham (Sherwood, Dear England, Best of Enemies, This House) and is directed by Kate Wasserberg, who will make her National Theatre directing debut.
The production will see original cast members George Caple, Dominic Carter, Helen Carter, Aron Julius, Nathan McMullen, Lauren O’Neil, Barry Sloane and Mark Womack returning with further casting will be announced.
Set in ’80s Liverpool, Bleasdale’s seminal drama follows five men trying to make ends meet while job opportunities are scarce.
Boys from the Blackstuff is a Liverpool’s Royal Court production by arrangement with Bill Kenwright Limited.
The National theatre also announced today a string of shows for 2024 including John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath starring Succession’s Cherry Jones; Katori Hall’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy The Hot Wing King; and a revival of Mnemonic by Complicité.
