A new comedy writing prize is now open for submissions.
The Victoria Wood Playwriting Prize for Comedy is inviting comedy writers to submit their scripts, for the chance to win a £25,000 prize fund.
The prize has been created by Birmingham Rep artistic director Sean Foley, and is in partnership with The Victoria Wood Foundation.
The prize is the UK’s first major playwriting competition dedicated to comedy, and is open to UK residents only, who are over the age of 18, and in all and any stages of their career.
The winner gets a commission fee of £10,000 funded by the Victoria Wood Foundation, and an award of £15,000 prize money.
The prize will take place biennially, and has just one category: New Comedy Play, which must be an original, full-length, unperformed and unproduced piece of work.
The deadline for submissions is 23.59 on Friday 1 Decemeber 2023. Reading and selections will take place until April 2024 and then the shortlist will be announced in May 2024.
The final winner of the prize will be revealed on what would have been Victoria Wood’s 71st birthday, on Sunday 19 May 2024.
The Victoria Wood Foundation was set up following the death of much-loved and hugely talented comedian, writer and actor Victoria Wood, who died in April 2016.
