Casting has been announced for immersive show George Orwell’s 1984 which opens at Hackney Town Hall next month.
Shakespearian actor Jude Akuwudike will play O’Brien, alongside Kit Reeve in her stage deubut as Julia, with Declan Rogers (Antigone, Lyric Theatre) playing Winston.
Jude Akuwudike’s long stage career includes: Three Sisters, The Overwhelming, Edmond, The Machine Wreckers, Richard II, Ion and Moon on a Rainbow Shawl all at the National Theatre; The Two Noble Kinsmen, Pericles (Shakespeare’s Globe); Marching for Fausa, The Recruiting Officer, Our Country’s Good for the Royal Court; and, God in Ruins, Macbeth, Pericles, The Winter’s Tale and Luminosity, all for the RSC.
Adapted for the stage by Adam Taub, this new reimagined production places the audience in the heart of the action. The lead cast will be supported by an ensemble cast drawn from drama schools across London.
Adam Taub said, “The show is directed by Richard and Jem from Hydrocracker Theatre who specialise in creating site specific and immersive work and have collaborated extensively with major theatre festivals creating work that really moves and challenges audiences. In Jude, Kit and Declan they have a superbly talented core of actors that have captivated audiences across the theatre and film world. And with an ensemble cast drawn from drama schools across London, we have a really exciting company and we can’t wait for the opening night.”
1984 opens at Hackney Town Hall on 26 October with previews from 19 October and runs until 26 November 2023.
