A new production of Dear Evan Hansen is set to open in Australia in October 2024
Sydney Theatre Company and the Michael Cassel Group have secure the rights to stage a new production of Dear Evan Hansen – the first original production since the show debuted on Broadway.
The new production will be directed by Dean Bryant – who directed hit productions of Fun Home and Hubris & Humiliation – and will form part of STC’s 2024 season, running from 12 October 2024 to 17 November 2024.
The Tony and Olivier Award winning musical follows a socially awkward high school student who is welcomed into the family of a dead boy, who mistakenly believe they were friends. Dear Evan Hansen has a book by Steven Levenson; Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul.
Casting and further details about the Australian adaptation are to be confirmed.
Tickets for Dear Evan Hansen will go on sale 11 October 2023.
STC and the Michael Cassel Group previously worked together on the Australian productions of Hamilton and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Michael Cassel Group also produce the Australian productions of & Juliet and the forthcoming production of Beetlejuice The Musical.
STC’s 2024 season will feature 15 shows including: Hugo Weaving and Irish actor Olwen Fouéré in Thomas Bernhard’s The President, an “explosive” co-production with Dublin’s Gate Theatre that will have a half-Irish and half-Australian cast; Angus Cerini’s Into the Shimmering World, which will star Kerry Armstrong and Colin Friels as a farming couple who must contend with a once-in-a-generation drought; Jane Harrison’s 1998 play Stolen, following five members of the Stolen Generation; A Fool in Loved, a delightful rom-com and razor-sharp spoof, this seventeenth century farce has been ingeniously infused with a dose of twenty-first century oomph; No Pay? No Way! returning to STC following a huge hit in 2020; and, RBG: Of Many, One by Suzi Miller also returns.
