Harry Potter and the Cursed Child celebrates its 7th birthday in the West End

Hit West End play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is celebrating its 7th anniversary today, Sunday 30 July 2023, in London.

The show started its run at the Palace Theatre on 30 July 2016 and has packed in audiences ever since, with over 1.5 million people seeing the play across 1,149 performances.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is also extending its run in the West End, and is now booking to 19 May 2024.

The play has won over 60 major awards during the last 7 years, including nine Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Play, and six Tony Awards including Best New Play.

Other fun facts about the show are that 560 costumes and 100 wigs are used every night for the 42 strong London cast, plus there are 53 people backstage making the magic happen; and 42 wands are used, casting over 57,450 spells across the last 7 years at the Palace Theatre! That’s a lot of magic!

The current London cast includes James Howard as Draco Malfoy – who we interviewed this week about performing in the show for the whole of its 7 year run; plus Sam Crane as Harry Potter, Frances Grey as Ginny Potter, Thomas Grant as Albus Potter, Thomas Aldridge as Ron Weasley, Michelle Gayle as Hermione Granger, Grace Wylde as Rose Granger-Weasley, and Adam Wadsworth as Scorpius Malfoy.

They are joined by Gabriel Akamo, Troy Alexander, Harry Ames, David Annen, Sue Appleby, Sabina Cameron, Phil Cheadle, Robert Curtis, Tim Dewberry, Iskandar Eaton, Lewis Edgar, Jack Gardner, Jemma Gould, Kelton Hoyland, April Hughes, Max Hutchinson, Emma Louise Jones, Tom Mackean, David Mara, James McGregor, Kathryn Meisle, Gigi Noel-King, Melaina Pecorini, Niamh Perry, Ruchi Rai, Ian Redford, Rosalind Steele, Tom Storey, Joshua Talbot, Susan Vidler and Wreh-asha Walton. Benedict Archer, Hector Baldwin, Chloe Grant, Honor Hastings, Harry Munson, Delilah O’Riordan and Jude Parry who alternate two children’s roles.

The show is based on an original new story by JK Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, and written by Jack Thorne and directed by John Tiffany.

Other members of the creative team include movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music & arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions & magic by Jamie Harrison, music supervision & arrangements by Martin Lowe, and casting by Julia Horan CDG. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.

Four productions are currently running worldwide – in London, New York, Hamburg and Tokyo.

The Melbourne production closed earlier this month on 9 July 2023, and across its 1,300 performances became the longest running play in Australian theatre history.
