Boy George has teased fans of his musical Taboo that a new incarnation of the show may be heading to Mancheser (and London?) next year.
In a tweet yesterday he said that he had “just read a fabulous new synopsis of Taboo which will play next year in Manchester. All will be revealed soon!”
The show did come back for one night only last year, to celebrate its 20th anniversary at the London Palladium.
Based on a true-story, Taboo is set in 1985, as brilliant designer and performance artist Leigh Bowery opened legendary London nightclub Taboo. Frequented by Boy George and other legends of the New Romantic scene, Taboo quickly became the hottest club in town, and a symbol of the excess and decadence of 1980s London.
Taboo has music and lyrics by Boy George and Kevan Frost, and a book by Mark Davies Markham. It’s unclear who might be writing the new book.
The original West End production launched the careers of a number of fabulous performers, and starred Luke Evans, Matt Lucas, Diane Pilkington, Declan Bennett, Euan Morton, Lyn Paul, Stephen Ashfield and John Partridge. Plus Paul Baker won a much-deserved Olivier Award for his portrayal of Philip Salon.
Julian Clary, and Boy George himself, also made their West End debuts in the musical.
