Cynthia Erivo is set to star in a film adaptation of Prime Facie, the hit West End play which is currently the toast of Broadway starring Jodie Comer.
The movie will be produced by Participant and Bunya Productions, with Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo executive producing.
BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee Susanna White (Star Wars: Andor) will direct, with the play’s writer Suzie Miller adapting the play for the screen.
Cynthia Erivo is a Tony Award winning and Oscar nominated stage and screen actor whose credits include The Color Purple in London and on Broadway, movies Harriet and Widows, and TV series Genius: Aretha.
She is currently filming the stage-to-screen adaptation of mega-hit Broadway and West End musical Wicked, alongside a cast that includes Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey.
Jodie Comer won a 2023 best actress Olivier Award for her role as lawyer Tessa in the London production at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2022; and earlier this month also bagged a Tony Award nomination for the Broadway run, which scored impressive reviews from the critics, and is currently playing to packed audiences at the Golden Theatre in New York.
Cythia Enrivo told Variety that: “I am thrilled to be joining Suzie, Susanna, Participant, Bunya and the rest of the team on this journey. Tessa’s experience sheds such vulnerable light on the complex conversations around consent and sexual abuse and the law that surrounds it, which is all too relatable for so many and timely for all.”
She also said: “Jodie Comer’s powerhouse exploration of that struggle on Broadway is nothing short of beautiful and heart-wrenching. When I read this script I knew it was important work to do. I look forward to getting to know who Tessa is to me as ‘Prima Facie’ goes from stage to screen.”
Playwright Suzie Miller said that Erivo is “a highly talented and nuanced actor who will create a bold and dynamic Tessa for the screen.”
Prima Facie starring Jodie Comer is playing at the Golden Theatre on Broadway until 2 July 2023.
