King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be crowned this Saturday, 6 May 2023, in London, with the UK celebrating the occasion with a Bank Holiday weekend.
That also means lots of TV to watch, so here’s our run-down of some of the West End stars and theatre-related TV that will be playing during the holidays, including the Coronation Concert.
Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert
Sky Arts is airing the 25th anniversary concert for Les Miserables, which took place at the O2 starring Alfie Boe, Samantha Barks and Matt Lucas.
Watch this TV premiere on Monday 8 May at 9pm (or if you are desperate, Friday 5 May at 6.15am).
Peter Pan Live
If you can’t wait til Christmas to watch Peter Pan Goes Wrong in the West End, then tune in to Sky Arts on Monday 8 May for NBC’s 2014 live special Peter Pan Live, starring Christopher Walken as Captain Hook.
Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds
The musical version of H.G. Wells’ classic is playing on Sky Arts on Sunday 7 May at 8pm.
The Coronation of HM The King
TV coverage will be from first thing in the morning on Saturday 6 May, and the service in Westminster Abbey begins at 11am.
The service will include music selected by the King, with 12 newly commissioned pieces, including a piece by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The Service will be sung by The Choir of Westminster Abbey and The Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, together with girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and from Truro Cathedral Choir. The Ascension Choir, a handpicked gospel choir will also perform as part of the Service and The King’s Scholars of Westminster School will proclaim the traditional ‘Vivat’ acclamations.
Coronation Concert
The Coronation Concert will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May.
Hosted by Downton Abbey and Paddington star Hugh Bonneville, the concert will see a host of stars take part including My Neighbour Totoro star Mei Mac, stage and screen star – and new Doctor Who – Ncuti Gatwa, Tom Cruise, Joan Collins, Tom Jones, Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Tiwa Savage, Andrea Bocelli, Paloma Faith, Lang Lang, Nicole Scherzinger, Olly Murs, Bryn Terfel, and more.
Also, for the first time ever, the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal College of Music and the Royal College of Art will all come together to perform a special one-off performance.
