Tony Awards 2023 nominations announced

The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League have announced nominations for the 76th Annual Tony Awards 2023.

Today, 2 May 2023, Lea Michele (Funny Girl) and 2022 Tony Award winner Myles Frost presented the nominees live on CBS This Morning in the US (watch the announcement, below).

In total, 38 Broadway shows were eligible for awards, including 17 original plays and six revivals, and nine new musicals and six musical revivals.

Shows leading the nominations are Some Like It Hot, the theatrical re-imagining of the classic movie, which scored an impressive 13 nominations, followed by West End import & Juliet, and Shucked and New York, New York, which each scored nine nominations.

West End productions that have transferred to Broadway and have been nominated include Leopoldstadt with six nods, Life of Pi with five nominations, Prima Facie with four nominations, and Death of a Salesman with two nominations.

British talent up for Tony Awards this year include Jodie Comer for starring in Prima Facie, and British directors, who dominate the Best Direction of a Play category including Jamie Lloyd for A Doll’s House, Patrick Marber for Leopoldstadt, and Max Webster for Life of Pi.

Prior to the nominations announcement it was revealed that Jerry Mitchell will receive the 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award in recognition of his involvement with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS; and the 2023 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be presented to Lisa Dawn Cave, Victoria Bailey and Robert Fried.

The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 40 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. Any productions opening in the 41 eligible Broadway theatres during the current season (5 May 2022 to 27 April 2023) were considered, in 26 competitive categories. Winners will be chosen by 769 designated Tony voters within the theatre community.

The winners of the Tony Awards 2023 will be announced in a live ceremony on 11 June 2023 at the United Palace Theatre, hosted once again by Ariana DeBose.
