Rumours are coming out of Hollywood that Jessie Buckley (Olivier Award winner for Cabaret) and Paul Mescal (Olivier Award winner for A Streetcar Named Desire), are in the running for the movie version of Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet.
The movie is currently in development by Hera Pictures, Amblin Partners, Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions and Book of Shadows.
Chloé Zhao is set to direct the film, and Maggie O’Farrell has also signed on to adapt the script with Zhao.
The stage adaptation of the book, written by Lolita Chakrabarti, opened at the RSC last month, and transfers to the Garrick Theatre in London in September, running from 30 September 2023 to 6 January 2024 – book tickets here.
Liza Marshall of Hera Pictures had initially jumped in and grabbed the rights to O’Farrell’s best-seller, but agreed to allow the RSC and Neal Street to produce the stage play before the movie got underway.
Marshall, plus Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes on behalf of Neal Street, are producing the movie with Amblin, with Book of Shadows’ Nic Gonda executive producing.
