Sadler’s Wells and Wayne McGregor have announced a new collaboration between fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner and The National Youth Dance Company (NYDC).
NYDC is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an exciting collaboration with renowned fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner who has designed costumes for NYDC’s upcoming performance of Novacene, a new work by Guest Artistic Director and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Wayne McGregor CBE. Novacene will premiere this week at The Lowry in Salford, followed by a performance at Sadler’s Wells Theatre on June 3rd and a UK tour.
NYDC is made up of 34 young dancers from 19 towns and cities across the country. To celebrate its anniversary, Sadler’s Wells will host a series of birthday parties linked to the tour dates, bringing young people together to celebrate and dance. The Sadler’s Wells Learning & Engagement department will also lead activity around the country, including 100 free school workshops and five regional commissions celebrating the success of the company.
McGregor’s Novacene explores the world of augmented humans, robots, hyperintelligence, and AI’s potential to supplement and evolve our physical and mental experience. Wales Bonner’s designs aim to allow the young artists to shine with their full individuality and energy.
Wales Bonner launched her label Wales Bonner in 2014, which is informed by broad cultural research and embraces a multiplicity of perspectives. She has received numerous awards, including Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards (2015), the LVMH Young Designer Prize (2016), and CFDA International Men’s Designer of the Year (2021).
NYDC is the country’s flagship company for young dancers, run by Sadler’s Wells. The year-long experience within the company provides members with the necessary skills and techniques to find career opportunities and raise aspirations, self-esteem, and confidence. McGregor, as Guest Artistic Director, is determined to offer NYDC dancers a unique insight into the dance profession and encourage new voices and new dance to lead the way to an evolving and inspirational fresh dance scene.
